HDMI connection
Jan 11th, 2010 at 9:18am

Can anyone help. I have a Humax Foxsat box that is connected between my Sharp projector and Denon AV amp. The projector has a DVI connector which is adapted to receive the HDMI link to the amp. Unfortunately the only way I seem to be able to get TV sound and picture on my screen is by connecting the Freesat to the amp via component connections & the optical connection. When I connect using the HDMI cable the Humax logo appears momentarily on the screen then all goes blank. I am told it may be a handshake issue. Even if I disable the HDCP (?) setting it still won't connect via HDMI. Connecting the Freesat directly to the projector via HDMI works (but without sound).

Any suggestions. Thanks

The problem is DRM (Digital Rights Management) which is an anti-copying system built into digital HD receivers. When a receiver is connected to a compatible TV using the HDMI connection, the TV identifies itself as not being a recorder, so the feed is enabled. If no such identification is received, the receiver will blank the digital output. The component outputs remain available because they are analogue and this means that no lossless digital copies can be made from them.

The reason that you get no sound with the direct connection is that DVI does not carry the sound data as HDMI does, so it needs an additional sound feed (optical or analogue). It does seem that the projector is sending back the DRM identification data though.

Thanks for explaining that. Is there any alternative/fix or does it mean I can not have HD using that projector?

You can use the direct HDMI-DVI connection to the projector with a separate audio feed to your amp.

Doesn't the FoxSat not have a digital audio socket? Feed the picture to the projector via HDMI and the audio decoder amp via digital audio.
