Deleting a file
Jan 19th, 2010 at 6:36pm

Can anyone suggest how to delete the title of a series?  When we were new(er) to the Box, we made the mistake of not waiting for the 'recycle bin' to disappear, which meant that the actual recording was deleted, but its title + (0) remained. Embarrassed

Thanks.  Dig

Not familiar with this. Which product do you have? You've presumably tried deleting it again?

Hooray!  A reply!  It's a FOXSAT-HDR, and yes, we've zapped Delete again, as well as shouting at it (and each other!) Smiley

To be honest, the reason I replied was that I felt guilty no one had helped, rather than because I was confident I could solve your problem - you've obviously got the experts stumped. Anyway, the only other thing I can suggest is to somehow defrag, or failing that to format, the hard disk. Have a look in the menus under system maintenance or HDD. Obviously watch or save all your HDD stuff prior to formatting it.

If you need to post again please remember to say which Humax product you are having problems with, I doubt any of us on here are psychic.  Wink

Before going the whole way to a re-format, search to see if there's an option to repair the file system, or if anyone knows a trick to force an automatic repair on Humax boxes. It's an "old old" problem on computers. The file is there but it doesn't have a valid end marker. The operating system doesn't know how big it is or if it's still in use, so won't delete it.

If the box is out of warranty there are ways to remove it, without losing other stuff, by connecting the drive to a PC.

It works! I'm changing nothing now until the big switch off.

I'm so sorry.  I supposed that the title of the thread would give some indication.  How very stupid of me.

Thanks to those helpful answerers! Embarrassed

the file system used is not a standard PC style operating system so trying to repair any sort of FAT table would be tricky to start with.  Even removing the hard disk and connecting it to a PC would not give good results - again, not knowing the file system type any data retireved would be junk.

i wouldn't waste any more time on it, watch everything you can, clear the hard disk of all your recorded programs and format the hard disk.

This is more or less my own feeling, so, of course, it has to be right!  Thank you very much for your thoughts and help.

I don't see any clue in the title of the thread "Deleting a file" that would lead me to guessing you were talking about a Foxsat HDR.  Huh

Yes it is tricky when first attempted, but as long as the disk is organised in tracks and sectors it doesn't matter much what the OS is. It's the sort of software tool that it's nice to have learned to use, but too dangerous not to keep under lock and key! We only ever used it as a last resort. Agreed, if it's only a minor annoyance, live with it 'till the simplest fix can be used.

yes, it doesn't matter what the OS - just what format the hard disk is formatted in, Humax doesn't seem to use a standard file system hence finding a complete file (presumably .TS but may not be called so) is the hard part - and not for the faint hearted.
