we have a new sky hd box, i cant seem to get sky with the magic eye on a second tv in my bedroom, the picture is very snowy.  The instructions say i should go into settings and type 501 or something, and highlight  rf outlet, my sky box does not have that facility

It's hidden! Type the sequence as directed without looking at the screen. You should get the installer menu. Turn RF2 power on. From your description it sounds as though you may also need to retune the second TV.

It works! I'm changing nothing now until the big switch off.

I remembered that the Sky + HD has a different sequence to access the Hidden Menu or Installer Menu.

The Sky + box and the Sky box access services button then quickly press 4 then 0 then 1 then the select button then choose eg RF output number 4...

The Sky + HD box has a different setup eg services 0 then 0 then 1 then select and I found this info here:

LINK: Sky: Hidden Menu Info

(Also notice the far right website search TAGS links to other topics.)

Perhaps the Sky + HD customers could confirm this different sequence, please. Thanks in advance. No need to change any settings, just to check.

Press {services} 001 {select} and look at the "RF Outlets" menu. Set the channel number (21 - 69) to a UHF channel which is unoccupied. At present you have it set to a Freeview multiplex - hence the "snowy" picture.

For a Remote Extender "magic eye" to work you have to set the RF Outlet power to ON (but this has no effect on the actual picture).

Please check channel choices here:

NB to find these recent posts, I used the forum keyword to search for the last 3 months, which is: taboo

It leads to a calculator of available RF channels according to your Freeview channels info.

Check these Google search results:

LINK: Google info here

The fixya website has an online chat option.

http://www.fixya.com/support/t1968352-sky_tv_magic_eye_wont_work

Professional installers may provide details on their websites:

http://www.godigital.uk.com/sky.html

When typing in search keywords for magic eye, one of Google's suggestions was for Sky + HD:

LINK: Sky + HD and magic eye

http://www.satcure.co.uk/accs/page3.htm

The info here suggests that you may need to replace the existing RF2 output with a fully-shielded coax cable.

http://www.satcure.co.uk/tech/tvplugs.htm

http://www.satcure.co.uk/accs/page7.htm

WF100WHTV1M WF100 White length 1 metre with TV plugs

COLCM - male - female converter 2xfemale

For now, test adding an extra available cable like an extension cable fitted to that RF2 output. Maybe the interference will be fixed that way or try a signal booster or amplifier to check for improvements.

If the signal is way too high, it floods the signal and may require some weakening or reducing by installing a variable attenuator, again from Satcure. So if the test cables or a booster don't work, then perhaps an attenuator will.

OK, it floods the tuner...

I will be getting Sky + HD next week.

I'm busy getting my Sky + box recordings off the hard drive so I won't lose them when the new free Sky + HD box gets installed, with a free dish upgrade as mine was installed in 2002...

I'll be able to test the various rear panel connectors and the Thomson AV sender now attached to the Sky + box scart.

The situation that Martin Pickering is referring to is of a Digital multiplex being present on the same UHF channel as the Analogue signal coming from the $KY box.
This is not actually "flooding (overloading) the tuner", (which would result in snowy pictures due to AGC action cutting tuner gain), but is simply the Digital Multiplex being seen as severe Analogue interference on the same channel.
Even a weak Digital multiplex will have this effect on Analogue reception where UHF channel allocations clash. It was a VERY substational problem back in 2001 in the area between Stockland Hill and Caradon Hill transmitters, and in certain other parts of the UK.... the broadcasters actually spent vast sums on replacing or realigning domestic aerials because of it.
