Hi

I saw it.

You've done a successful upgrade, posted my property back to me and submitted evidence of having done so. At present, this looks to me like an "End of (story)" Cheesy Looks that way but what about reply #27 A few questions still to be answered! Thanks again Smiley

So does anyone know if the HDD in the Digital Stream could have extra features like editing programmes etc? Even the Sagem had that! Would like some answers on this Wink Also more questions
1. I see in the menu it has a Sys Log ( this can be turned On/Off What is a Sys Log I take it it's on the lines of it stores all the recorded data like programmes you have recorded but it may also have other uses? What I don't know. Should it be switched On or Off? 2. I was lead to believe you can Copy Folder recordings either to a external device such as a HDD or even a DVD Recorder and even a USB Stick! but the menu says other wise. Any info on this copying to external  devices, has this got any bearing on wether the Sys Log is switched On/Off? Thanks in advance Smiley

Very serious problem. Last night I recorded a programme on ITV1 and it recorded ok (30 mins) it played back ok till about 12 mins then the picture and sound went off replaced by test signal noise it soon come back though but I decided to stop the paly back at that  point to come back to it later just tried to play from last viewed and A message comes on screen saying file size is not large enough to play?? The complete file was there this morning  any way checked the date of the file
recording and it said Jan 1 1970???? Could ITV be at fault and this is why there is a problem?
Half way through on channel 4 the picture went funny then garbled sound I just hope this   other recording is ruined either. Grrrrr Has any one else had similar problems with broadcasters and thier stations?

The default date may be because the recorder went back to default regardless of you thinking it was OK. The recorders etc may need to be reset to the current day and date and time before the recordings will display these correctly. It happens for the Funai DVD Recorders when we list the recordings eg in date order. The default times being listed last.

Broadcasters create problems for our recordings if the signal stops and the recorders can't function correctly from that point eg onscreen message says bad signal or satellite signal not being received or there's a random set top box reset.

For this reason, I've tried to record from Sky and Virgin Media and from Freeview for my favourite shows. I also use Timeshift playback if still available. Keeping hard drive space available for Timeshift is essential for the Fetch TV Smartboxes as well as the Sky boxes. Not so much for Virgin Media's Tivo box with 500GB storage.

If errors occur, it could help to record again using the +1 channels available or searching EPG listings for the exact show missed.

You'll never miss a programme again? Correct, you'll miss dozens and hundreds and thousands instead!

These missing segments could be at the start and end, because some set top boxes don't allow extra allowances eg 5 to 10 minutes before and after. Also watch out for i for info as that displays when the show title appears rather than from the previous programme. That's when I can make the correct title for the current show appear in my Freeview recordings.

In some Freeview experiences, weaker reception led to missing segments during several shows, nb different channels being affected within that Freeview group selection. Hence using +1 channels and later repeats and different Freeview boxes as some were OK.

I prefer to try 2 of the same set top box in different rooms for a chance to get something that works. Freeview+ proved much more helpful than the basic Freeview boxes without Timeshift, play, pause, rewind and fast forward and even slo-mo.

Once Sky is cancelled, such Timeshift actions end, so I must change the DVD Recorder's input to view the VM Tivo box instead.

Sometimes the EPG listings show a programme that gets listed incorrectly eg 3 hours long when it's actually a 1-hour show. Autorecording leads to 3 hours with 2 hours wasted and sometimes blocking a second show being recorded.

Overcome this using a Recording Timer setup eg 10 minutes before and after for a 1 hour and 20 minutes recording instead.

Some shopping channels have about 3 hours with just one slot in the EPG, so the timer gets round that and could be set up for several shorter recording times instead.

I do a lot of re-recordings eg the show is recorded then I play it back, pause and record and continue to the end title credits and then stop the recording. I export a copy to some USB drive or via a DVD recorder and then I can get rid of the original to free up more storage space for future recordings.

Several shows get listed eg as 2 hours yet merely add an extra show after a film and we can edit that out using re-recording options.

Otherwise, I'd try the Timeshift option if still working OK. Helpful with the Fetch TV Smartboxes able to span days of recordings but only showing the current channel, so if someone switches channel, it's ruined what we were trying to record that way.

The EPG was correct as was the time and date!
I have just checked again the file is still there it's number 49 of 50 and it says Barking Mad Thursday 29 June then File size 619Mb 0secs then the same date should be duplicated underneath this second date said Thursday 1 Jan 1970 my guess is when there was a break in transmission including over 30 secs of  what sounded like the test card signal but at a slightly higher pitch when the programme came back on air it must have done something in the PVR and changed the month and year. But why is there a file still showing 691Mb used? And the recording was there and watched 12 mins of it?  MIT London have heard of this problem before and blame it in on the broadcaster ( I can believe that!)
and have said they have a software fix for this already it's not the PVR's fault but to make sure this make and model isn't affected again
by broadcast errors etc thats their plan Smiley so that's good to know!

The other thing I tried is to copy the file to a folder ( this can be any folder that's already in place, or you choose a name for the folder) So I picked a empty folder and moved it there It took about 3 mins or so to transfere it to the folder so that means that the file is still there even though it can't be viewed and is certainly longer than '0' secs that fact is like I said it took 3 mins to copy it to a new place in the PVR means the complete file is there. As a '0' secs  recording could not take  up 619Mb on a SD programme? That's not possible IMO

It's clear your DS now has a little "File System Corruption" on its HDD. Continuing to use it with that remaining the case, could contribute to future recordings being problematic. If I was you, I'd aim to do such TV watching and copying to DVDR, as would put me in a position that I could format the DS's HDD (i.e. lose all recordings) without too much heartbreak - I'd have "peace of mind" after that!

I think MIT London are giving you a fobbing-off with that reassurance because the fix they're talking about sounds like one for "crash problem in case of illegal Date/Time is received from the signal" included within firmware 4.13.r8637 which you have already. Sad

Notwithstanding my not expecting it to alter its susceptibility to your present issue, would you like to "flash" your DS with a later firmware? Wink  Here's the "changelog" for it, with the items I find notable in bold:

Quote:
Release date: 29th/Feb/2012
Application 4.14.r8683 / r8684

- New Features

 iPlayer now supports H.264 HD stream
 Design change for Play progress bar
 Design change for Yes/No selection dialog
 USB launch package support

- Bug Fixes

 Fixes for Series Booking not working for CH5 & 5* programmes
 Fixes for TUTV initialization not working
 Fixes for 112 channel no audio – IP streaming service
 Audio/Video lip sync adjustment for delayed ITV HD channel
 Fixes for rare case of “micom update” display
 Fixes for MHEG iPlayer field test issue
 Increased the character area for PIN failure message
 Audio drop for BBC HD no patch version
 Fixes for channel up/down crashes when popup is displayed

Hi

The thing I don't like is you lose your scheduled recording list. You would think that this would be stored somewhere else in the STB and would be unaffected during the upgrade process...

I've just noticed that the DS has had that feature since your first firmware version, 4.11.r8280. Shocked

Quote:
[To Backup]

- Insert a USB memory
- Go to Menu->Others->Maintenance->Backup/Restore DB
- The Channel and Schedule Data Base will be stored into the USB

[To Restore]

- Insert the USB memory which has stored Channel and Schedule Data Base
- Perform Restore Default
- At Welcome screen, press [Exit] remote control button
- Go to Menu->Others->Maintenance->Backup/Restore DB
- The Channel and Schedule Data Base will be restored.

If you have another USB disc (freshly formatted to FAT32), I'd recommend putting the Schedule Backup file(s) onto that one, preferable to combining that database onto the same USB as has a firmware upgrade on it.

OTOH, if you don't have a second USB disc I think it's worth trying to use just one for both functions - the worst effect I foresee is that the DS might try to upgrade itself a second time, even though you have the USB inserted to do a Schedule Restore! If the DS is well-programmed, it'll recognise it already has the firmware on the USB disc, ignore that content and be able to see past the firmware to the Schedule database.

How about this for a suggested course of action (if you borrow my USB disc again):

* With DS on, insert USB (upper rear USB socket).
* Choose Menu->Others->Maintenance->Backup/Restore DB
* DS to Standby, pause, Power Off.
* Power On, firmware upgrade happens.
* Power Off, unplug USB, pause.
* Power On, insert USB.
* At Welcome screen press Exit and Choose Menu->Others->Maintenance->Backup/Restore DB.
* Schedules and Favourites are restored!

Regards

Hi Right got it so this USB Launch Package Support is to save schedules etc then! I have asked in future updates to maybe include a adjustable display brightness as when it's in standby it's dim My DVD recorder already has this on and it's around 5 years old! Auto/DIm/Bright should be quite easy to do! Another handy feature I have asked for is editing of recorded programmes I bought a Seagem PVR which had editing for recorded programmes but the main software was very buggy and sent it back to QVC and my money
was refunded Smiley Can I purchase a HDMI lead that has a scart plug on it so I can copy programmes to either the HDD/DVD of my HDD/DVD Recorder?
MIT have been very supportive and have helped me with sending me updates on a USB stick!
Regards Smiley

Why not just use a SCART to SCART connection to do that.  Tiz what I do.
