Can anyone throw any light on a problem i am having with the above pvr.If the the unit is in standby having not been used for a while when it is brought out of standby there is no video or audio. This can also happen if its left powered up but not used. If the mains power is turned off and on (rebooted) everything is ok.

Could be an HDMI handshaking problem.  Try turning the TV away from then back to the DS when this happens.

Hi

Have you tried gentler means of persusion - because switching the mains power on/off regularly will shorten the DS's life. e.g. Try harmlessly flipping the channel up/down, dialling-in "80" for the "BBC News" station or accessing any DS menu then exiting.

The manufacturer's website "MIT London" is essential reading for discontent DS owners. This is also the route by which DigitalStream issues new firmware/software upgrades for their products. Do you have the current DS firmware, 4.14.r8683 ? If not, maybe you should download and install it onto your recorder.

Regards

Many thanks for the replies.I have downloaded the latest firmware from MIT. I have also shifted the unit away from the TV and the problem persists. I have tried just doing a channel change ,prog in a channel, menu selection etc but nothing brings on the video/ audio. The display will show what is being selected but still no output to the tv.Strangely its only the HDMI output that is affected.Scart output is ok .

There are some set top boxes with HDMI output to HD TVs etc. The audio and video outputs may not work immediately despite tuning in Freeview channels via the scart connection. This has happened for the Fetch TV Smartboxes offering Freeview via a scart output as well as the HDMI output cables. There is a MENU option for PREFERENCES, ways to customise and these include scart and HDMI settings as well as TV settings for 4:3 or 16:9 or other screen formats to work OK for your TV.

So I had to check PREFERENCES then Audio and Video settings, enable HDMI video output, enable audio HDMI output, then they worked OK.

Link to User Manual:

mitlondon.com/main.php?l_code=03&itemcode=DHP8100U/DHR820xU

In some cases, a Troubleshooting guide in the User manual may point out this sequence for customisation for HD TVs. The MIT website will offer extra info as would the Helpline.

There are times I've disconnected HDMI cables to reverse them and reconnect them and the HDMI worked OK, but to do this and be successful might simply be as a result of switching off the equipment and switching back on again.

With HDMI, my HD TV has a blank screen for a few seconds before appearing OK.

By the way, some set top boxes reset themselves to default settings, so it helps to verify that other settings are working as they were manually set to.

I think by this, gomezz meant "flipping" the Input Select on the TV away from its HDMI socket and back again.

Yep.  Sorry if this confused people into physically turning the TV to point to a different part of the room.   Smiley

Did that include "flipping" the Input Select on the TV away from its HDMI input and back again?

Yes.I have even changed the HDMI output to 1080i/1080p.Still no output from HDMI.It appears to be getting worse,it will now not bring on an output in HDMI with rebooting as it used to. Embarrassed

Is this "digitalstream DHR8205XU" a cheap Chinese box? Take it back while it's still in warranty.

Thanks for the continued interest.
No, the  PVR was £199.99 purchased from John Lewis after a search of the Internet and viewing/reading various reports etc. I thought after reading these reports  it seemed a good buy so i took the plunge.

Hi

Still no output from HDMI.

In a normal manner, un- and re-plug your HDMI lead 3-4 times at each end to wear-off oxidisation.

Try assorted substitution tests, e.g. different HD device with same TV & lead; different HDMI lead; different HDMI lead & TV etc.

If the testing points to the fault being in the DigitalStream then invoke your warranty. AIUI, bought from JL you have a 2 year warranty (to February 2013).

Thanks for the reply Stoppingservice.
I have tried switching the HDMI lead and also reversing it.Don`t have another device that outputs HDMI, will have to get a hold of something. A new lead has also been tried .I have at last been able to get in touch with service at MIT london and have sent an e-mail to them regarding the problem asking for their help. Will keep you posted of their response.

I have had a reply from MIT london and they suggest the problem is incompatibilty between the DS and my TV.Difficult to believe as the pairing has been ok for the past year !!They also say that previous versions are available at ,wait for it,WIKKI.COM.Versions of what?I guess updates, but the web address is wrong and when you do find the correct address where do you go? Not impressed by this company at all.
