Help please
Jul 18th, 2012 at 5:43pm

I've got a TV with built in freeview (2 HDMI, 1 Scart), BT Vision (2 Scarts, 1 HDMI) and a DVD recorder (2 Scarts). I'd like to be able to watch the built in freeview if recording from BT Vision but can't as both TV and Vision box need direct aerial input and I don't know what type of splitter to buy. I'd like to record from BT Vision. I don't know what to do and where leads go and will I need aerial leads between any of the boxes apart from the two into TV and Vision box. Thanks anyone.

Are you saying the BT Vision box and the DVDR do not have and RF Out as well as an RF In socket?  If they do then you can daisy-chain the aerial feed from aerial to BTV to DVDR to TV.

To record from the BTV I suggest you connect SCART leads as follows:-

BTV(AV1) --> (AV2)DVDR(AV1) --> (AV1)TV

But also connect the BTV directly to the TV with an HDMI lead as this may give a better picture than relying on the SCART lead connection passing through the DVDR.

Thanks for replying. The DVD recorder has rf in and out as does the BT vision box. The problem, at the moment, is that I can't watch the built in freeview on the tv if the aerial is in the vision box and I can't watch the vision box if the aerial is in the tv. I don't know what splitter I need to get a lead from the wall box into the vision box and the tv. I also want to record off of the vision box but don't know how to set it up to do that. I wish I'd never bought the new tv sometimes. Even the advisor on this site is no good as it doesn't even ask about hdmi sockets in the equipment.

You don't need a splitter.  You just need a couple of RF co-ax patch cables to daisy-chain the aerial feed.  Something like this:-

I have already explained how to connect up to record from the BTV to the DVDR.

If they're ordinary co ax leads I've got loads, but I don't know where to fit them so I can see the BT vision or the built in freeview. At the moment I can't see one if the aerial is in the other. I've noted how you said to do the DVD recorder to record from BT vision, but don't I need co ax leads between those two?

The co-ax leads are to pass the aerial signal to all the different pieces of equipment.

The SCART connections are to record from the BTV to the DVDR and see the results on the TV.

The HDMI connection is to view the BTV box on the TV.

There should be a button on the TV's remote control to allow you to switch to the source (DVDR or BTV) you want to view.  It will be called Source or Input or AV or some such.

It's as you wrote with the scarts, but I've got rf from roof to dvd recorder, from that to bt vision box and from that to the tv. I've got the switch over on the tv in the sources list, but unless the aerial from the roof is in the tv I can't view the built in freeview. When it is I can't see bt vision channels.

Have just checked. I was wrong. RFs are roof to bt vision box, from that to dvd recorder, from that to tv and I can't get any channels on the built in freeview with that set up, just the bt vision. I honestly think I'll need a splitter and God knows how I'll have to set that up. Thanks for your help, though. It's appreciated.

Quick update. We tried it without the dvd recorder in it and it works. We can see the bt vision and built in tuner. The DVD recorder, which is about cough splutter years old is being retired and I'll get a basic player. Dvds are cheap enough to buy now so I won't bother recording films anymore.

I think you need to check the power saving option on the DVDR and make sure it is turned off to allow RF pass-through.

Ok, my old dvd recorder has been retired. I'm not even going to try using it with another tv (it's got built in freeview and that seems to be a problem too). I've asked a new question on the technical thread about usb recording. Thanks for the help on this one. Much appreciated.
