Broadband: Double Speed upgrades
Aug 26th, 2012 at 11:30pm

The TV advert explained about the double speed Broadband upgrades which will help us with our downloads.

http://virginmedia.com/doublespeed

That led here:

http://doublespeed.virginmedia.com/?buspart=press_73

The postcode check I did stated the work was in progress with an estimated completion at the end of August 2012.

Here are a few extra links:

Info to help explain the changes:

Double the broadband, double the fun

Even though my customers already have the UK's fastest broadband, they'll be able to have more fun tweeting, shopping, playing, video-chatting and watching HD movies if I double their speeds. So that's exactly what I'm doing for over 4 million Virgin Media broadband customers. Because I can.

My best engineers are upgrading the Virgin Media fibre optic network area by area. To find out when your area's going to be ready, just use the postcode checker below.

If you're one of my up to 100Mb customers, I reduced your monthly bill in April 2012 and now I'm going to boost you up to 120Mb as soon as your area's ready.

More about the upgrade, once you've checked postcode info:

Figures:

Broadband size: XXL50 Up to 100Mb
Broadband size: XL20 Up to 60Mb
Broadband size: L Up to 20Mb
Broadband size: M Up to 20Mb

I mentioned before that when I upgraded from 10 MB, I was told of the increase to 20 MB yet it was decided to upgrade that to 30 MB overall. Since then, I upgraded to 60 MB prior to the August upgrade.

By the way, none of this has improved my access on yahoo's email service as I still wait the extra adverts and their stuff to load up before I can actually scroll down to view the email. I get faster access using the POPEEPER program that just loads the email itself, pictures etc. Sometimes with an external link to view the email contents online instead.

Graphics webpages may seem to load faster but that's probably because the images are already in the Temporary Internet Files folders. Once removed, we must start loading these afresh, so there will be extra delays at such times.

Other Internet resources include the website copier programs that download a single page or its extra linked contents or the whole website. These downloaders have extra filters to opt for images or video content or to exclude other files like css and html etc. Hit and miss at times, yet when the programs work well, they can help get lots of files quicker than manually loading page-by-page.

Another option is to load a webpage and choose File, Save As, Complete webpage eg for reading while offline.

Denis your problem with the yahoo service is not related to your internet speed its related on the speed the adverts are actually sent to you, which i am sad to say has slowed down several services.

Installing an addon like firefox's ad blocked may improve your speed by preventing these adverts from loading in the first place.

ON moving house i was informed that my speed would be upgraded free of charge to 30 meg broadband which has now been doubled,

To test the new speed i downloaded a speed test file which at 60Mb's gave me 7.5MB's per second for those music listeners thats about 2 songs in 1 second or 1 song in 1 second for high quality.

I am very impressed with these new speeds and would reccomend them to any heavy user.

Bandwidth was increased with the upgrade as well. instead of 3 gigabytes before traffic management kicks in it is now 10 gigabytes, this is good because when traffic management kicks in your speed is halved and with the 60Mb broadband you can go over this in about 30 minutes. and go over 3 gigabytes in about 10 minutes.

Never fear though if you jsut use it for facebook and web browsing you would be hard pushed to go over even the 3 gigabye limit in a monthand remember the speed is only as fast as the slowest link.

My double speed upgrade originally was set for July according to the website. This date has now been moved back months.

Thanks for the yahoo feedback and extra web browser options. When I have a few extra Internet window options already open, I can view these while yahoo updates itself.

I'm surprised to learn that some are getting delayed on the doublespeed updates when already estimated for July.

As I've cancelled Sky and Sky Multiroom, my VM bills are about £60 a month for the TV TiVo XL channels, Broadband, the phone bills and the extra V+ box player. That would have been so much more last year than now.

Its is unfortunate but these adverts support yahoo and help pay for the servers and the staff. If running a website of your own and considering advertising one should bear in mind the impact on the users of the website as intrusive ads and popups reduce user experience as in Denis's case slow loading webpages that wait for the advertisements to load before giving you access to the content.

Only note on this is that advertisers  help support the website so if you do use the website a lot its worth letting the adverts load so the hosts get some help towards the cost.

I am getting less and less impressed by the charges which Virgin impose for those of us not taking TV services. A little fibre optic competition from the likes of BT Infinity is sorely needed.

I had to check the lowest subscription then had to upgrade from 75 to 110 channels and still wasn't getting near as I could with my favourite Sky channels, so I upgraded to the XP package to 175 channels including 23 HD channels, rather than getting Sky at the current prices near £20 a month plus £10 a month for Sky HD, plus another £10 a month for Sky Multiroom.

I switched to the VM TiVo box with 500 GB hard drive storage able to record 3 programmes at a time. I also got the V+ HD box mirroring what I received on the TiVo box as an alternative to Sky Multiroom, but it's just a viewer/player not a recorder.

The compromise helps me save some money each year. That's why I boosted the Broadband upto 20 MB yet got another free upgrade to 30 MB, now boosted free again to 60 MB.

The time and money saved on such Broadband speeds could be vital in real-time TV auctions for the Shopping Channels eg 1p and £1 Megadeals or Megadrops.

The TiVo helps record a whole show during its playback not just from its present playback.

I tried the TiVo for 28 days and kept it based on the new features and the TiVo software has been enhanced with a recent software upgrade.

The Try and Buy option was worthwhile at the time for me, yet new customers get the website cashback deals like quidco, topcashback and myvouchercodes.

Without these, I still got a discount deal for 12 months with an option to ask again eg next April.

The advantage of previously having a Sky+ HD subscription was in keeping the set top box for its free channels and its HDMI upscaling of SD channels, too. Once that's sorted, I was able to use more than just the TiVo and the V+ HD set top boxes to get the free channels VM don't or won't provide eg Revelation TV on Sky 581 not on VM channels.

I wouldn't recommend the VM channels as they are now. The XL package is the only real option for families to consider.

However, I phoned and queried my charges and was told not to switch to any other promotional deal as I'd personally lose out until next year, so try again later.

Worth a haggle on 150, but not always able to get a discount, hence previously switching back to Sky to get the Sky+ HD box installed free and the Sky dish replaced free as well. I merely upgraded to Sky+ HD at £10 a month for 12 months.

Everyone has the right to explain their finances to VM to request a better deal, if not now, then try later.

I'm not getting the very best deal now when comparing the use of both Sky and VM channels, but I'm saving money, enough to pay the TV Licence off.

I declined the option for Sky Movies 1 and 2 groups for an extra £20 a month!
