BT Vision Software Update Jan 2009

We’re getting reports that BT Vision boxes are being updated to new versions of software. It seems users are either getting:

1.2.14666.601 or 1.2.14666.651

From what we’ve heard from BT Vision Support, this update is at the request of Setanta Sport, and is to do with the NAGRA encryption software used to manage access to the subscription card slot.

Version 1.2.14666.601 apparently disables the viewing card slot, as the patch doesn’t include the NAGRA software, whilst 1.2.14666.651 has NAGRA so can be used with a Setanta Sports viewing card.

Seems this new release is to ensure that those not subscribing to Setanta Sports will find that they only get versions of software with the card slot disabled – presumably to block out pirated cards.

It seems though, that many legitimate subscribers are being frozen out, as BT Vision decided which upgrade a customer is due.

Site visitor Mark Winter tells us: “This version has stopped my Setanta Sports working. Setanta say they have received a lot of calls from BTV customers regarding loss of service. It means I cannot receive Setanta Sports without letting my existing subscription going through it’s 2 months notice, and starting again! I will not do this of course. I lose, Setanta loses (a lot), and BT does not win!”

If you’ve been affected, let us know in the comments below, or discuss this in our BT Vision forum
