Virgin to go 24 hours and get a +1

April 27th, 2009 by admin in Freeview Channels

From May the 20th, Virgin 1 on Freeview will switch from 12 hours a day, to 24 hours a day. There will also be a Virgin 1 + 1 (1+1=2?) service added, but this will only be for 12 hours a day.

The change to 24 hours involves Virgin 1 moving to a different multiplex, so users may need to perform a channel re-scan to get the longer hours from 20th May.

Project Canvas under fire

April 26th, 2009 by admin in Uncategorised

Project Canvas is a joint venture between the beeb, ITV and BT. The service, currently set for a 2010 launch, offers on-demand TV, as well as web and email access on your TV using special set-top boxes.

In April 2009, trade body Intellect Technology Association, as well as regulator Ofcom, both raised concerns about the plans for Canvas. Both parties have warned Canvas that it needs to be based on open standards, and available to all parties in the UK TV arena.

If it’s not, Canvas could find itself subject to a Competition Commission review, possibly along the lines of the one that killed off video-on-demand service Project Kangaroo.

The BBC Trust is set to deliver it’s verdict on a review of Canvas by the end of July 2009

BBC iPlayer goes HD

April 18th, 2009 by admin in Uncategorised

The Beeb’s confirmed that announced it’s offering high-definition content over their hugely popular BBC iPlayer service. This will offer an experience with twice the quality compared to the previous version of the iPlayer.

Shows due for the iPlayer HD experience include Doctor Who, Kerwhizz and Dragons Den.

The updated iPlayer makes use of adaptive bitrate technology and speed diagnostics to optimise the viewing experience based on the bandwidth available. There’s also a resizable window which allows users to switch between different quality streams. From what we’ve been told, the new high-definition streams will be provided in 720p, 3200kbps (H.264).

Broadband users should note that streaming or downloading high-definition content will affect your broadband download allowance – an issue if your broadband service has a capped monthly download allowance.

Two radio stations in London all silent

April 6th, 2009 by admin in Uncategorised

Time closesTwo London radio stations have just closed – Time 106.8 (South-East London and Greenwich) and South London Radio 107.3 (Lewisham and Bromley).

Time launched in 1990 as RTM Radio, renaming to Millennium 106.8 in 1996. The station was owned by the Sunrise Radio Group. After rating fell to a 1% reach, Sunrise put the station up for sale.

Both stations ceased broadcasting on 3rd April 2009 after the station’s new owner reportedly gave up after just seven days.

Our thoughts are with the former staff of these two London stations.
