BT Vision Sky Sports prices revealed

July 2nd, 2010 by Radio&Telly in BT Vision, Sky Digital, Sport

Sky Sports LogosWith the 2010/11 football season fast approaching, BT Vision has just announced pricing for their Sky Sports service.

Ofcom recently ruled that Sky has to offer their sports content to other TV services at reasonable prices, and this has allowed BT Vision to be able to offer the most popular sports packages at prices significantly lower than Sky’s.

If you’re happy to get your phone and Internet from BT, you could get Sky Sports from just £6.99 a month.

BT Vision Sports Price Offer

BT’s price announcement comes on the same day as Sky announced that Sky customers will now have to pay an extra £3 a month for the full sporting package – something that will make the BT Vision option all the more appealing to those looking to get footy at a lower price.

There’s another value offer to BT Vision customers – free ESPN when you sign up to a Vision pack (saving £10 a month).

OK – With Sky Sports on BT Vision, you won’t get Sky Sports in HD or the Sky Sports News (due to be removed from Freeview soon), but you will be able to watch all of the football action at lower costs than you’d pay to Sky, and you get access to hundreds of hours of on-demand TV, plus catch up TV from BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and Five.

If you’ve discounted the BT Vision option in the past, now is definitely the time to take a fresh look, and we can help:

Our podcast team released a full 15 minute review of BT Vision on the 1st of July – Listen to our BT Vision Review

Sky Sports on BT Vision and Top Up by August

May 1st, 2010 by Radio&Telly in BT Vision, Freeview Channels, top up tv

Sky SportsIt looks like BT Vision and Top Up TV will be launching an enhanced sports service for the 2010/2010 football season. Good news for football fans not keen, or not able, to have a satellite dish.

Until now, Sky has clung on tightly to their crown jewels, their rights to the majority of the Premier League match coverage, but following a recent ruling by the regulators Ofcom, Sky’s been forced to make their Sports channels available to competitors at a more reasonable rate. Here’s what we know of the proposed offers:

BT Vision: It’s understood that BT Vision plans to offer Sky Sports 1 to subscribers of its on-demand TV service for £15 a month for the 2010/2011 football season. BT Vision customers can also subscribe to ESPN, for matches not covered by Sky. ESPN is currently free to BT Vision Value pack subscribers. More on BT Vision

Top Up TV: We understand that Top UP TV would like to offer both Sky Sports 1 and 2 for around £20 a month from later this year. More on Top Up TV.

We’ll update you as we get more information on the plans to bring Sky Sports to providers other than Sky.

Changes to Sky Sport

March 31st, 2010 by Radio&Telly in BT Vision, Sky Digital

Sky Sports LogoPrices for Sky Sports 1 and Sky Sports 2 are set to fall following a ruling by UK TV regulator Ofcom.

Sky has enjoyed a virtual monopoly on sporting content for years, and have now been forced to reduce the wholesale price of their to premium sports channels, to allow other TV providers to offer the channels to their customers.

Sky customers currently pay around £35 a month for access to these Sky Sports packages (£17 for the basic service and an extra £18 a month for Sport).

One of Sky’s key rivals, BT Vision, has already announced plans to offer Sky Sports to its customers at a lower price than Sky, and we can expect Top Up TV to offer Sky Sports on their services. This could mean that UK customers will be able to get Sky Sports via a TV aerial before the 2010/11 football season starts.

BSkyB is not happy with the ruling, and will reportedly be appealing against the decision.

Expect upcoming announcements about cheaper Sky Sports packages in the near future.

New BT Vision box released

December 13th, 2009 by Radio&Telly in BT Vision

BT Vision has updated its BT Vision V+ set-top box

The new-style box now comes in shiny black, to match the BT Home Hub.

BT Vision V+ Box in black

So, what’s new with this new box? Sadly, it doesn’t offer any new whizzy functionality. Some were expecting the new Vision box to support DVB-T2 (needed for Freeview HD), but this one doesn’t. What is does offer is a slight re-design, a new colour, and some changes to the components to make the box a reported 12% more energy efficient. In 2008, BT announced that Motorola would replace Philips as manufacturer of the Vision boxes, so this new box may by a Motorola – we can’t confirm that at this stage.

The new BT Vision V+ box is available for free until January 15th 2010 to new customers and so customers can pick up signing up to any of the BT Vision viewing packs. Full details of the BT Vision offer on BT Vision’s site.

The new-style box is not available to existing BT Vision customers.

HD VoD coming to BT Vision

August 30th, 2008 by Radio&Telly in BT Vision, High Definition

BT’s announced that they’ll be bringing High Definition Video on Demand to their BT Vision TV service by the end of Summer 2008.

Existing BT Vision set-top boxes are being updated throughout August 2008 to a new version of software, 1.2.14642.551, which supports the HD service as well as fixing a number of minor bugs.

Pricing: Blockbuster movies will cost £4.95 each, with older films being priced from £2.95.
