We have a small teddy bear - Rusty - who dances to the news theme every evening at 10pm (she limbers up beforehand). Normally she sits quiety between us on the sofa watching TV all evening, but as we turn over to Channel 80, she springs into life. She preferred the theme previous to the new one, and became especially excited when it got to the couple of seconds when Kate Silverton (or the Flappy Lady as Rusty refers to her swishing about in her long coat) crosses the Millennium Bridge. She used to call out to the Flappy Lady but Kate never replied. All history, now. Rusty is quite sad. She sends Kate her best wishes, anyway.

There is a new channel on 790 called TEST, supposedly coming soon although there is no mention of when.

If other channel 'waits' have been anything to go by, we could be waiting until March/April as these things tend to take between 4 and 6 months before deciding whether or not they will actually be shown on freeview.

The only thing that worries me is that it will either be :

A new radio station (I don't know why, nobody uses them and you certainly can't "watch" them. Here's a tip Switch on the Radio.)

Or

Its just a test card for another station, which has been done before on freeview to test signals on the multiplex.

I still fail to understand why freeview seems to think we need internet based tv channels, have you ever watched Sports Tonight channel online? It looks like they're sitting in a cupboard.

My first attempt at Freeview didn't impress me as much as getting hundreds of free to view Sky channels. Freeview isn't Freeview without having some aerial installation, so if that's already done, people think getting a set top box is somehow cheaper than getting Sky installed. I paid about £55 for the rooftop aerial and about £45 for a set top box. At that time, a Sky installation without subscription was £120. Freeview later needed a signal booster, so the price worked out the same. Nowadays, everything's different because of the Internet, so while I've upgraded to Freeview boxes with ethernet Internet access, these aren't the same as the HD boxes which can stream a few extra channels added recently to Freeview eg Revelation TV etc. As Sky wants £10 a month just to record the free to view channels, some switched to Freesat recorders instead. I switched to Virgin Media instead and got discounts due to the phone rental, the XL TV package, the TiVo HD recorder, the V+ HD player, the 60MB Broadband. Freeview offers a few of Sky's subscription channels free to the public, so it's worthwhile for these, yet Freeview+ recordings onto internal hard drives mean I can export the recordings to external USB hard drives and faster than real time playbacks from Sky or Virgin Media to my DVD Recorders. I'm therefore saving electricity as well as time using Freeview+ recorders instead. So I'm glad I got Freeview+ with over 100 channels, as well as using the ethernet Internet access instead of my pay as you go dialup Internet access I used before. I'm also reminded that USB adapters can access the files from SD Memory Cards, so there are additional media centre options, too, eg slideshows, music playbacks, video playbacks. Furthermore, I bought a DVD Player with Freeview that also upscales to the HD TV, thus improving DVDs as well as the Freeview SD channels. Freeview has developed, so it isn't just about 110+ SD channels anymore.

Several retuning times have been forced on us and each time we risk losing channels if we retune at times when the signal strength or picture quality percentages are too low. We can check the TV Statistics perhaps through some MENU leading to HELP, then Diagnostics or a similar setup. I have 5 Freeview number groups for Waltham TV: 29, 54, 56, 57 and 61. Those with HD boxes also tune in HD on 58. http://tinyurl.com/wolfbane-freeview checks postcodes for local transmitters and their Freeview groups, etc. http://www.aerialsandtv.co.uk helps provide transmitter details for extra tricks and tips such as aerial types, as all-frequencies wideband aerials get weaker reception for the lower numbers in the 21 to 69 range. As these are the first in an autoscan, they sometimes add weaker or duplicate channels eg in the 800+ range. So I prefer the manual scans instead. The RT Forum advice was to tune in 61, then 54, then 29, then 56, then 57. So it isn't always like the manual suggests. Freeview retuning advice may say to tune to channel 80 before retuning. We learnt this from retuning info here: http://www.tvretune.co.uk/productmanuals yet some retuning affects set top boxes and their TV Signal statistics even upto a few days later. After retuning again, I switch off the box to let it start afresh a few minutes later, hoping it shows the usual percentages between 80% and 90% picture quality I usually get. Winter atmospheric problems affect our attempts to retune. I upgraded to the http://www.satcure.co.uk WF100 cables and found improved percentages, so I removed the signal boosters and have had the same good reception since. It's even more important for Freeview+ timeshift and recordings and even more important if using HD set top boxes. So visit the RT Forum to learn about variable signal boosters and attenuators for increasing or decreasing the percentages. Get feedback on aerials and set top boxes, too. http://tinyurl.com/rthome and visit the RT website sitemap for extra tricks and tips re missing channels etc. http://www.radioandtelly.co.uk/sitemap.html

The RT Forum advice was to tune in 61, then 54, then 29, then 56, then 57. So it isn’t always like the manual suggests. It’s even more important for Freeview+ timeshift and recordings and even more important if using HD set top boxes.

Sky offers Entertainment channels as a minimum package, yet the Kids channels are on the Entertainment Extra package, thus more to pay. Offering half price movies has its advantages if already subscribed to the HD channels package. Everything gets complicated when we consider other offers like recommend a friend, instead of a straight shopping vouchers deal to a new customer. Cachback websites and voucher sites also offer us deals and some apply to existing customers wishing to upgrade. Sometimes haggling saves money from the get-go via a phone call to Sky. Sometimes during the 12-month contract or towards the end for renewal or cancellation. I found it difficult to continue with Sky and Sky Multiroom using a Sky+ HD box and a Sky+ box. So I switched to the Virgin Media TiVo 500GB HD box recorder as well as the V+HD player only box instead. It was a compromise, so I lost channels and gained others on their XL TV package including 24 HD channels free. Furthermore, I'm upgraded to the 60MB Broadband speed VM offers. Compromising saved me about £100 a year. I later learnt VM wanted £20 a month extra for Sky Movies 1 and 2, so I declined. There are too many variations offered by these companies and both Sky and VM will increase their prices. I got a 12-month discount on the VM phone line rental, saving about £45 if I paid £120, so that helped reduce prices, for a while, beyond the savings of ebilling instead of paper billing and paying by direct debit saved money as well. As I said, too many variations, terms and conditions, special offers, cashbacks, haggling attempts etc.
