SeeSaw To Shut or Be Sold

If you’re not aware of the name SeeSaw LogoSeesaw, it’s an online TV service that lets you watch TV shows from the BBC, Channel 4 and Five, for free. And the future of SeeSaw is in the balance.

The service, which offers 3,500 hours of free to view TV content, first launched in 2010. It was bourne of something called Project Kangaroo, and as been struggling to complete in the increasingly crowded online TV market. Last month, the service’s parent company Arqiva, decided to pull the plug. The service was scheduled to close yesterday, the 20th June 2011.

It does seem that there’s a chance that the SeeSaw service may get a reprieve though. US investment firm Criterion Capital Partners, has expressed an interest in acquiring SeeSaw, and we understand talks are underway at the moment to secure the future of the service, and the jobs of the 28 people working on SeeSaw. Should they gain control of SeeSaw, at this time it’s unclear what plans they would have instore to revitalise and monetise the service.

Criterion Capital Partners recently acquired the social networking service Bebo, and apparently are considering purchasing MySpace
