Sky to launch Sky Go

Sky TV LogoSky is set to launch a new service, Sky Go, on the 6th of July 2011

The service will pull together Sky’s TV-over-Internet service Sky Player, with its mobile TV offering, allowing existing Sky customers to be able to watch live TV on their desktop and laptop computers, as well as on smartphones and tablet devices.

The service will be free for existing Sky subscribers, and a month or so after launch, will also be made available to those who don’t subscribe to Sky’s TV service. It’s expected that a Sky Go subscription for non-satellite customers will start from £15.

Channels also available on the Sky Go platform will include Sky One, Sky Sports, Sky Atlantic, ESPN, G.O.L.D, Nickelodeon and Disney, and in addition to live Sky, the service will also offer some TV shows movies “on-demand”. Channels available on mobile devices such as the iPad, iPhone and Android tablets will be limited to a smaller selection of live channels, including Sky News, Sky Sport and ESPN.

Sky Go subscribers will only be allowed to register two devices or computers for accessing the Sky Go service, and as with other IPTV services, you won’t be able to access the service legally outside of the UK.

Given that we’re seeing more and more streaming TV services coming to the mobile world, it’s good to see Sky making the decision to make the service to subscribers for free, when historically, Sky’s charged a monthly fee for access to some live TV services on mobile devices.

Watch out for Sky Go from the 6th of July.

i’m not happy about sky launching sky go, i used to pay for sky player because i don’t have a dish, it made it easy to watch some of the channels like history etc without having to buy any more equipment other than a laptop to watch it on, now it’s just not the case, they did the same thing when itvdigital went bust, so i’ve found it very unfair that you can’t watch those channels anymore, will they be changing their policy anytime soon?
