The unit makes the most alarming cracking noise, which apart from the fright seems in fact to be harmless enough. But the playback continually jams, the program listings populate really slowly or not at all, and the software frequently crashes, requiring a mains switch-off and re-boot - great fun in the middle of your favorite soap. Pace are apologetic, have promised a software fix for the last 18 months, but the box tells me there's never yet been one available yet. Pace know there's a problem but customers experiencing it get no more than soft soap. Avoid. |

A minor problem is that it only has enough hard disc space for ten hours worth of recordings. A MAJOR gripe is unreliability: despite a couple of firmware updates (downloaded as on-air updates), my machine is prone to crashing while doing timer recordings. If this happens, the red light stays on and none of the buttons on the remote control or front panel will work. The only way to recover is to cut the power. Even if I wait until long after the programme was due to end, the result is a programme library entry that says "Empty recording". Despite the fact that the amount of time remaining matches the programme length, there is no way to play back the recording and the only option is to erase it. By "sod's law", this always happens with the programmes I most want to see, and that are not repeated. I think it may be time to get rid of the Pace and get something more reliable. |
