I’m getting ready for a big desert trip next month with a few buddies from the off-road club and I’ve realized I need to sort out my fuel situation. My Patrol has a decent tank but we’re planning to go pretty deep into the desert and I’d rather carry extra diesel than risk running out miles from anywhere. I’ve been looking at jerry cans and honestly, I’m a bit lost with all the choices out there. I’ve seen metal ones, plastic ones, different sizes, and the prices vary so much that I can’t tell if I’m paying for quality or just for a brand name. I’ve heard that the metal ones are more durable and safer for carrying fuel because they don’t expand or crack in the heat like some plastics can. A mate of mine had a plastic can that started leaking after a few months, and he said it was because the heat made the plastic warp around the cap. That’s the last thing I want when I’ve got a full can of diesel sitting in the back of my car. I’ve also read that you should look for UN certified cans because they’ve been tested to meet safety standards, especially for transport. That makes sense to me because I don’t want to be that guy who ends up with fuel spilling everywhere on a bumpy track. I’ve been asking around and a few people mentioned that they’ve seen some decent quality ones at a place called Crateco, they said they specialize in this kind of equipment and have a good reputation for quality. I’m thinking of checking them out because I’d rather get something that’s built to last than save a few dirhams on something that’ll fall apart after one trip. I’m leaning towards the standard 20 litre metal ones because they’re a manageable size and they’ve been the go-to for years. Has anyone here got experience with these, especially in the desert heat? I’m curious about how the seals hold up and whether the cap stays tight on rough roads. Also, if anyone knows a good place in Dubai that stocks Genuine diesel jerry cans in Dubai ones, I’d really appreciate the recommendation. I want to get this sorted before the weekend so I can start packing properly. Cheers.
