Sky Go iPhone and iPad Launches

Sky LogoSky’s new mobile TV and on-demand service launched recently. Today, the Sky Go iPhone and iPad application has gone live.

With this new application, you can watch the following live TV channels:

  • Sport: Sky Sports 1, Sky Sports 2, Sky Sports 3, Sky Sports 4, Sky Sports News and ESPN
  • Movies: Sky Movies Premiere, Sky Movies Showcase, Sky Movies Action and Sky Movies Family
  • News: Sky News

If you’re already a Sky TV subscriber, then you’ll be pleased to know that the Sky Go service is free, although you have to subscribe to the appropriate channels – so for example, if you subscribe to the Sky Sports TV package, you’ll get Sky Sports on Sky Go for free.

You can get the app, also for free, from iTunes: Sky Go iPhone and iPad at iTunes

Once you have installed the application, you’ll need to enter your Sky iD username and password. If you used Sky Player in the past, or have the Sky+ Remote Record app on your iPhone / iPad already, then you should have a Sky iD already – if not, you can get one quickly and easily from the Sky Go site.

You’re prompted for the Sky iD username and password when you first try to access a live TV stream. When we tried, we got an error message “Entitlement: To watch Sky Go you need to link your Sky iD to your Sky TV account”. We have our Sky iD tied to our Sky TV account already, so knew this was an error. We exited the app and restarted it, and that seemed to cure the problem, at least for us.

If you get this error message and your Sky iD is tied to your TV account, try restarting the app

We’ve been testing the Sky iPhone app for a few hours, and it seems to behave well, and the quality of the live stream is very good. We’d love to see a few more channels though. It’s surprising that Sky’s chosen to exclude  Sky 1, Sky Atlantic and Sky Living from the mobile version of Sky Go – hopefully something they’ll address. At the moment, the mobile offering seems to be very sports-heavy, but of course as we all know, sport is a big earner for BSkyB, so is bound to be strongly represented on any new offering Sky rolls out.
