Obsolete Freeview Receiver List
Changes made to Freeview for the Digital Switchover may render some Freeview receivers and digital TV sets made before 2005 obsolete. Here is a list of known obsolete receivers.
Why are boxes becoming obsolete?
When onDigital, itvDigital and Freeview launched in the UK, the services used the 2k COFDM transmission system. The UK started switching to the 8k COFDM transmission system as part of the Digital Switchover, and many old onDigital / itvDigital and some early digital TV receivers, can't handle the 8k system. These receivers were made in the late 1990s. Some other older boxes also don't work, as they were unable to support something known as 'Split NIT'
This means that after UK TV regions completed the Digital Switchover, people owning one of the affected boxes were no longer able to tune in to the Freeview channels.
I have an affected box, what do I do?
If your box has been rendered obsolete as a result of the change, you will need to get a replacement Freeview box - these cost from £25. See our page of Freeview boxes
I have an affected TV set. What do I do?
If your TV set can no longer receive Freeview channels as a result of the change, you will need to connect a Freeview box to your TV using a SCART lead. Freeview boxes cost from £25. See our page of Freeview boxes.
Alternatively, contact the manufacturer of your TV to see if they are able to offer any form of upgrade or alternative.
