NHK World HD broadcasts 24 hours a day and is a service provided by Japan’s public broadcaster NHK, fed live from Tokyo.

This is an English-language TV service, and with recent events in Japan, provides people around the world with an opportunity to look at events as they happen in Japan, and to get a take on the world from the Asian perspective.

NHK World HD is available on the following channels from today (9 May 2011):

  • Sky channel 507
  • Freesat Channel 209

Freesat users should be happy, as this brings the number of HD channels available on the free-to-air satellite TV service to 5 (Channel 4 HD was recently added too)

Emma Scott, the MD at Freesat had the following to say “This is good news for news viewers and opinion formers across the UK.  NHK World HD is a high quality world news channel and we’re delighted to be able to offer this to Freesat viewers, along with our other HD channels, free of charge.”

Speaking of the events in Japan that shocked the world in March, NHK World’s Makoto Harada said: “I feel proud that our channel, NHK World has been able to contribute to the world coverage.  It is also our great honour that we will soon be able to show our HD channel to viewers in the United Kingdom on Freesat.”
